Program will provide students with new opportunities for high-level work in Division I athletics
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's Athletic Department and the school's Division of Sport Management have teamed up to provide selected St. John's students with a first-class opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the highest level of college athletics.
Open to third and fourth-year undergraduates and graduate students beginning in the 2026-27 academic year, the St. John's Athletic Leadership Internship Program will allow students to enroll in a year-long professional development experience designed for high-achieving Sport Management students and future professionals.
"I'm so thankful for Dr. David Hedlund and his commitment to getting this revamped internship program off the ground," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Ed Kull. "The St. John's Athletic Department and the Division of Sport Management have always enjoyed a wonderful working relationship, but this program will serve to further strengthen that connection to the benefit of the entire institution. We're looking forward to welcoming several interns who will help elevate the St. John's brand while gaining invaluable experience in their chosen field."
To be eligible for this credit-earning internship program, students must be either a Sport Management major or minor, or be approved to enroll in a Sport Management internship. Students should carry a recommended cumulative and major GPA of 3.5 and must be able to commit to the program for at least one full academic year. Applicants should also be able to secure a strong professional or faculty recommendation.
"This Athletic Leadership Internship Program represents the very best of what higher education can offer: meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for successful careers," said David P Hedlund, Ph.D., Chairperson of the Division of Sport Management. "By working alongside professionals in a Division I athletic department, our students will gain practical skills, expand their professional networks, and develop a deeper understanding of the sport industry. We are proud to partner with Athletics to create an opportunity that bridges the classroom and the workplace while helping students take the next step toward their professional goals."
If selected for the program, students will have the ability to work in several key areas of the athletic department, including, but not limited to:
