Ruben Prey Shines With Portuguese National Team

Junior averaged 15.0 points per game in pair of World Cup qualifiers
QUEENS, N.Y. – On the eve of his junior year with the Red Storm, St. John's Men's Basketball standout Ruben Prey put up a pair of stellar performances for the Portuguese senior national team this past week during the second round of FIBA World Cup Qualifiers.
In two games, Prey averaged 15.0 points on 60.0% shooting, including a 50.0% effort from beyond the arc. The rising junior also converted at a 71.4% clip from the charity stripe on 14 chances. In addition to his scoring efforts, Prey averaged 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 29.6 minutes per outing.
Prey exploded onto the scene in his debut with the senior national team, helping Portugal secure its first-ever competitive victory over its Iberian neighbor and European basketball power, Spain. Prey tallied 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting in 33 minutes of action. He sank two of his three tries from 3-point range in addition to grabbing four rebounds and swiping three steals.
On Monday afternoon in a loss to Georgia, Prey went 4-for-5 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free throw line to finish with 15 points for the second straight game.
Prey is coming off a strong finish to his sophomore season, as he averaged 8.3 points on 8-of-9 shooting during the Red Storm's three NCAA Tournament games. Prey went 5-for-5 from beyond the arc during March Madness, including a 4-for-4 showing against Duke in the Sweet 16.
St. John's is coming off another stellar season in 2025-26, as the team swept the BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament titles for the second time in as many years and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999.
