Red Storm swung a season-high .359 in third straight sweep
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team swept NJIT to start the second day of the Iona Invitational on Saturday afternoon, 3-0.
Head Coach Joanne Persico faced off against St. John's Hall of Famer and NJIT Assistant Coach Jackie Ahlers. Ahlers is one of the greatest hitters in program history, ranking third all-time in kills with 1,766. During her time in Queens, Ahlers guided the 2005 Red Storm team to a 26-9 overall record and helped catapult the program to some of its most successful years.
The Red Storm (7-2) secured a wire-to-wire victory, thwarting any offensive momentum by the Highlanders (1-10) over the three-set contest. The set scores were 25-12, 25-17 and 25-19.
The Johnnies fired 46 kills, enroute to swinging a season-high .359, the best hitting percentage since the team swung .388 in a 3-0 win over Butler on Oct. 25, 2024, in Carnesecca Arena.
Lejla Hadzriedzepovic tallied a match-high 12 kills and was closely followed by Carola Tesoro with 11. Maggie Carcillo recorded a season-best 21 assists. Defensively, Rashanny Solano Smith picked up 14 digs, and Chloe Bell and Kya Harris each blocked 1.5 total shots.
St. John's came out firing on all cylinders to start the match. The squad downed 15 balls to go along with a .522 hitting percentage, the best in a set this season. Tesoro led the way with five kills as the Red Storm took the set, 25-12.
To start the second game, the Red Storm took an early 6-2 lead, but NJIT fought back to tie it at 8-8. St. John's regrouped and used a 6-0 run to go up 14-9 and didn't look back, taking the second set, 25-17, and a 2-0 match lead.
Once again, the Johnnies ran out to an early lead at 11-4 and continued to push through to the red zone at 20-9. NJIT was able to fend off match point multiple times, but a kill from Angelica Rodriguez sealed the deal for 25-19 frame win and 3-0 match sweep.
St. John's is back in action tonight, taking on tournament host Iona. First serve against the Gaels is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
