Red Storm tally its sixth consecutive win
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball continued action in the 12th Annual Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic with a sweep Bryant in Carnesecca Arena on Friday night. With the win St. John's extends its win streak to six straight, the longest since it rattled off six consecutive victories during the 2024 season.
After a hard fought first frame, the Red Storm (10-2) settled in and secured its first sweep of the Bulldogs (5-10) since the 2022 campaign. The set scores were 25-21, 25-8 and 25-13.
St. John's notched 39 kills as a team, swinging .318. The defense was able to hold Bryant to a .048 hitting percentage and swatted 10.0 total Bulldog shots.
Lejla Hadziredzepovic tallied her first double-double of the season on a match-high 12 kills and added 10 digs. Carola Tesoro followed with 10 kills. Martina Capponcelli quarterbacked the offense with 16 assists and Amanda Caputi chipped in 13 helpers of her own. Rashanny Solano Smith recorded 20 digs. Chloe Bell was the top netminder in the contest, collecting 2.5 total blocks (1 BS, 3 BA).
Set one was tightly contested as both the Red Storm and Bulldogs played to seven tie scores throughout the frame. Bryant jumped out in front with a three-point advantage at 11-8, but a 6-2 spurt put the Johnnies up one at 14-13. St. John's settled into an offensive rhythm and was able to hold off Bryant to take the opening set, 25-21.
The second game played into St. John's favor early, and it held on for a wire-to-wire set win. After a 7-1 run, the Red Storm continued to pour on the kills with 13 total tallies in the frame. An 8-2 run at 12-5 built a sizeable cushion that would hold to the 25-8 final.
Game three started like set one, with both squads deadlocked in a back-and-forth to 6-6. The Red Storm then engineered a 5-0 run to go out in front, 11-6. St. John's continued to apply pressure en route to a 25-13 set win and 3-0 victory.
St. John's will close out the 12th Annual Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic against Rutgers tomorrow. The Red Storm is aiming for its first win over a Big Ten opponent since the squad downed the Scarlet Knights on Sept. 14, 2018, 3-1. Prior to that result, the last time St. John's defeated a Big Ten institution was Michigan State during the historic 2007 season.
Rutgers is led by former Johnnie Caitlin Schweihofer, who returns to her alma mater where she captained the Red Storm to the 2006 BIG EAST Championship behind a 31-5 overall record and undefeated 14-0 mark in conference play. Schweihofer, formerly Rimgaila, was named the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2006 for her excellence on the court and in the classroom. First serve against Rutgers is set for 5 p.m. in Carnesecca Arena.
