St. John’s Volleyball Sinks Seton Hall to Begin BIG EAST Action, 3-0

Red Storm pick up its first league win of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team opened the 2026 BIG EAST slate on Wednesday afternoon with a convincing sweep of Seton Hall in Carnesecca Arena. This is the first time the Johnnies swept the Pirates in Queens since Nov. 15, 2019.
The Red Storm (11-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) powered past the Pirates (8-5, 0-1 BIG EAST) by holding them to a .080 hitting percentage. The set scores were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-19.
St. John's fired 46 kills from eight different Johnnies, while swinging .284 in front of a packed Carnesecca crowd. The Johnnies recorded 8.0 total blocks, holding the Pirates to just 25 kills.
"This was such a great three-set BIG EAST victory in front of a lot of fun and loud school children during our Field Trip Day," said Head Coach Joanne Persico. "Our team stuck together to grab that close first set and showed a lot of grit and toughness."
Lejla Hadziredzepovic tallied a match-best 16 kills while swinging .452. Carola Tesoro and Kendall White followed with nine kills and eight kills, respectively. Maggie Carcillo dished out 22 helpers, while Amanda Caputi finished with 19 assists and 11 assists for her fourth double-double of the season. Rashanny Solano Smith notched a match-high 17 digs. Hadziredzepovic and Teodora Stamenkovic swatted 2.5 total shots each.
The opening set played into the hands of the Pirates early, taking a 10-5 lead. The Red Storm settled in and engineered a 6-0 run to erase the deficit, leading 15-14 at the media timeout. From there, the Johnnies pushed to a 25-19 set victory.
St. John's and Seton Hall went back-and-forth to start the second frame, all the way to 6-5 in favor of the visitors. The Red Storm ripped off a 6-2 run to take a 12-7 advantage. SHU wouldn't go down quietly, coming within a pair of tallies at the media timeout, 15-13. The Pirates knotted the contest at 16-16, but St. John's rallied for an 8-2 run to close out the set 25-18 and take a 2-0 match lead.
Game three featured an early 4-1 run by the Pirates. The home team fought back to take the lead at 8-7. Both squads refused to let the other gain a sizeable lead and remained tied at 10-10 until the Red Storm used a 4-0 spurt to force a Seton Hall timeout. Another 6-0 swing forced the Pirates to take its final timeout at 19-11. In the end, St. John's came out on top by a score of 25-17 and secured its first BIG EAST win of the season.
The Red Storm are back in action on Saturday against No. 25 Creighton. First serve against the nationally ranked Bluejays is set for 7 p.m. in Carnesecca Arena.
