Volleyball Powers Past UAB in Nightcap of the Lou Carnesecca Invitational, 3-1

Eight Johnnies registered kills during Friday night’s contest
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team continued the Lou Carnesecca Invitational with a hard-earned 3-1 win over UAB on Friday night.
Behind a rowdy Carnesecca crowd, the Red Storm (4-1) strung together runs when it needed them most and kept the Blazers (2-3) at bay. The set scores were 25-23, 25-14, 19-25 and 25-20.
St. John's logged 62 kills as eight Johnnies registered kills, outpacing UAB's 39 tallies, and collected 64 digs throughout the match.
The two-headed attack of Lejla Hadziredzepovic and Carola Tesoro led the way for the Johnnies, collecting 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Once again, Amanda Caputi and Maggie Carcillo split setting obligations, with Caputi dishing out 28 assists and Carcillo adding 24. Rashanny Solano Smith nearly tied her career-high with 28 digs, finishing just one shy of her best. Carcillo, Caputi and Solano Smith each logged a pair of service aces.
The first set was tightly contested, featuring 16 tie scores and seven lead changes. After exchanging points through 16-16, St. John's built some distance with a quick 3-0 spurt, but UAB responded to knot the score once again. With both teams nearing the red zone, the Johnnies once again rallied with a 4-1 run to hold onto the lead to the end of the set at 25-23.
St. John's powered through the second set by hitting .480. The Red Storm jumped out to an early 7-4 lead to start and continued to press on to the media timeout at 15-9. A subsequent 5-0 run pushed the lead to as many as 10 for the Johnnies at 21-11, holding on to take the set, 25-14, and a 2-0 match advantage.
UAB jumped out to an early lead to start frame three at 8-4, but St. John's answered with a 5-1 run to knot the contest at 9-9. The Blazers shook off the response and went back up by as many as five midway through the set. However, the Red Storm refused to go down quietly and roared back with a 5-0 run to tie it at 16-16. UAB once again shook off the charge and went on to take the frame, 25-19.
The Blazers once again took an early lead to begin the fourth game at 8-2, forcing St. John's to burn a timeout early. At 12-6, St. John's mounted a massive comeback, going on an 11-2 run to go up 16-14. The Johnnies continued to push and held on to take the final set, 25-10, and the match, 3-1.
St. John's concludes the Lou Carnesecca Invitational tomorrow afternoon against East Texas A&M. First serve against the Lions is set for 1 p.m.
