Queens, NY - The St. John's University women's Basketball team continued their unbeaten streak this evening with an 83-70 win over local rival Hofstra. Sophomore forward Angela Clark (Copiague, NY) led the way for the Red Strom with her second straight double-double, tallying 19 points and 13 rebounds. The Red Storm improve to 5-0 on the season, while Hofstra falls to 2-2.
Led by eight early points from sophomore Kia Wright (Copiague, NY), the Red Storm pulled out to a 15-4 lead. Hofstra answered back with an 8-0 run, capped off by a three-point shot by Cigi McCollin that cut the St. John's lead to 15-12. Freshman Andrea Peterson (Norwood, PA) made her first basket of the game, another Red Storm three-pointer, at 10:48, to put the Red Storm back in control with a 20-12 lead.
With 8:32 left in the first half Hofstra's bench received a technical foul, and Peterson converted one of the two resulting free throws. On the ensuing play, Clark hit a turn-around jumper to make it a 25-14 ballgame. Solid defense by the Red Storm caused a five-second inbounding violation on the Pride, and Wright responded with a three on the next play to give St. John's a 14-point lead, its largest of the half.
Hofstra tried to keep the game close in the early minutes of the second half, as a three by Charlotte Baldrey pulled the Pride within 11, but St. John's offensive attack did not stop. Kati Kurtosi (Miskolc, Hungary) scored five-straight for the Red Storm over a 20 second stretch, putting St. John's up 60-42. Hofstra answered with a 5-0 run of their own, but St. John's put the game out of reach when the Red Storm took their largest lead of the afternoon, a 20-point advantage coming off of two Wright free throws.
The Pride shot the ball well down the stretch, hitting four threes in the last two minutes of the game, three of those baskets coming from Jenna McSpadden.
Tara Walker (Jersey City, NJ) finished with 18 points and six rebounds, while Wright finished with 14 points. Cigi McCollin led Hofstra with 19 points and six assists. Lizanne Murphy added her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Red Storm will return to action on Saturday, December 4 against another local rival, Fordham. Tipoff in the Bronx is scheduled for 4 pm.
