St. John's Dance Team Takes Ninth at Nationals Jan. 20, 2004 JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The St. John's University dance team placed ninth at the 2004 College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships this weekend in at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The Red Storm's ninth place finish in the Division I section of the UDA Championships is the highest ever for the team, and comes after last year's 13th place showing. Cal State Fullerton finished in first place, followed by Sam Houston State, Hofstra, Southwest Missouri State University and Delaware to round out the top five. Southeastern Louisiana took sixth, George Mason placed seventh, Northern Arizona placed eighth, the Red Storm were ninth and Oakland University rounded out the top-10. More than 75 dance teams from Division I schools participated in the event. "We're thrilled at our finish," Dance Team Head Coach Christine McCarton said. "The kids have worked really hard for this, and they're excited." The St. John's University Dance Team has been in existence for more than 40 years, and is rich in tradition and pride. Every year 15 to 20 students with diverse dance backgrounds perform during time-outs and halftime of all home basketball and soccer games. In addition, the Dance Team has also made appearances at other sports events. While a major part of their season is spent supporting the varsity Red Storm sports, the Dance Team competes annually and entered the national championships ranked 13th in the country among Division I squads.
