St. John's Announces Athletic Department Award Winners May 12, 2004 Queens, N.Y. - St. John's University will be celebrating its 58th Annual Athletic Awards Dinner tonight at 7 p.m in Alumni Hall. The event is a special night in which the student-athletes, coaches and support staffs celebrate the hard work and effort put forth into the 2003-04 athletic seasons. The athletic award winners for each of their respective sports were announced earlier today and will be honored tonight as part of the festivities. Highlighting the evening's events was the announcement of the Haggerty, Kaiser and McSwiney Awards. Senior baseball player Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and senior volleyball player Robyn Kurasaki (Mililani, Hawaii) were selected as the 2004 Richard F. McSwiney Award winner's. The McSwiney Award is given annually to the male and female student-athlete who best typifies the St. John's man and woman. Rozema is a hard worker who takes care of business both on and off the field. Last season, he batted .408, the second-highest batting average in St. John's history and earned third-team All-American honors. He is a natural leader and an inspiration to his teammates. Kurasaki leaves St. John's as the all-time assists leader, accomplishing this feat even after switching positions to better the team. She is also a tremendous success off the court; she is a member of the Presidents society and dedicates countless hours to many different charities and community service projects, helping those less fortunate. Sophomore volleyball player Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.) was the recipient of the John W. Kaiser Award, which is given to the outstanding female student-athlete representing St. John's University. Ahlers is the first player in St. John's volleyball history to earn All-American honors. She set the BIG EAST conference and St. John's records for kills in a single season with 608. Ahlers was also named to the 2003 All-BIG EAST first team. Senior soccer player Chris Wingert (Babylon, N.Y.) was presented with the 2004 Frank G. Haggerty Memorial award, which is given to the outstanding male student-athlete representing St. John's University. Wingert is a two-time first-team All-American, and is the first Division I player to win both the Hermann Trophy, given to the top player in men's soccer, and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar-Athlete Award in the same season. He will leave St. John's as one of the most decorated student-athletes in school history. The following Athletic Awards were also given out:
