Several Past and Present Red Storm Student-Athletes Head Off to 2004 Empire State Games
The 27th Empire State Games kicked off on this morning in Binghamton, NY, as many members of the St. John's family, both past and present, will be participating in this year's games. The event, which runs through August 1, will feature over 6,000 athletes in 28 sports.
Highlighting the Red Storm's representation are sophomore Daryll Hill (Queens, NY) and junior Ryan Williams (Queens, NY), who will both play for the New York City team in the men's basketball open division. The team will begin competition at 6 p.m. tomorrow as they take on Adirondack. The defending Empire State Game champion New York City open division volleyball team has a strong St. John's flavor. Current student-athletes Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, NY) and Yana Ruban (Kiev, Ukraine) are joined by head coach Joanne Persico-Smith and former St. John's standout Olga Roudovski as they attempt to repeat as champions. Current assistant coach Mario Treibitch will be the head coach of the squad. The New York City team begins play tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., taking on Long Island, featuring 2004 graduate Angela Tassone. The Red Storm women's soccer team will also be well represented at this year's Games. The Adirondack open division squad will feature three St. John's student-athletes, including junior Erin Henderson (Watervliet, NY), sophomore Erinn Flaherty (Clifton Park, NY) and newcomer Marissa Testa (Niskayuna, NY). Also competing this year is senior Dominica Reina (Frankfort, NY), who will be playing for the Long Island team. The Adirondack trio begins play tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. versus the Central team, while Reina's first game will be at 4 p.m. that afternoon against Hudson Valley. Former St. John's women's basketball star and last season's leading scorer Kim MacMillan will lead the New York City open division team this week. MacMillan and the NYC team has its first game Thursday morning at 10 a.m. against Adirondack. Incoming freshman Jenn Jones (Arkport, NY) will be playing on the Western open division team, that opens play tomorrow at noon versus Long Island. |
