POSTGAME QUOTES: St. John’s vs. Xavier
Head Coach Joe Tartamella, Shamachya Duncan, and Emma Nolan spoke to the media after St. John’s 74-37 win over Xavier.
St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening Statement…
“I thought we set the tone early, especially the way that we started the game in the first quarter. To get out quickly, which we haven't done in the last two games, I thought really gave us the energy we needed throughout the game. I felt we had a lull in the second quarter and then I thought the third quarter obviously was a difference maker in the game, along with just being able to finish in the fourth. It was a great way to send our seniors out in their last home game. To be able to watch Machi [Shamachya Duncan], make her threes today, there’s no one more deserving than she is to be on the floor at the start of the game and then back in there toward the end.”
On the team’s depth…
“I think it's great. I think Emma [Nolan]’s worked really hard all year and for her to be able to see it go through the net today and in many different ways, I thought really helped our team and defensively, I think, we've been a little bit underrated. I thought today defensively we were really good and credit to Emma on her defense in the post. We're sharing the ball better. Obviously, we knew that if we could jump on and we felt that we would be in a better position to win the game. It’s fun to be able to watch, five, six, maybe sometimes seven different players in any given game be able to score the way that Emma did today. It's great to see that and obviously get a win along with it.”
On St. John’s the BIG EAST Tournament…
“I think that five BIG EAST teams with 11-7 records at the end of the regular season shows certainly the strength of the league. You look at the scores today and throughout the year, and I think any team on any given night has an ability to win. That's why it was so important to win your home games and then be able to steal as many as you can on the road.”
On his three seniors…
“They all mean something a little different. So to see how fast it went between [Alisha] Kebbe, Shamachya [Duncan], and Alissa [Alston], I could probably spend hours talking about them. We always talk about, you don't really know what you're going to miss till they're gone. I'm excited to see what all their futures hold.”
St. John’s Guard Shamachya Duncan
On coming in and scoring early…
“It was great. I think I felt great going into it and I was just happy to be able to end it here like that.”
On what it has meant to play for St. John’s…
“It means a lot. This is my family. I’ve gained more friends and this was a great opportunity and a great experience all four years.”
St. John’s Forward Emma Nolan
On her career-high 16 points…
“My teammates just know how to find us and they’ll get me open on the three-point line, so credit to them for finding me. We just all came to the game ready to have energy for our seniors.”
