St. John's University Athletics
POSTGAME QUOTES: St. John's vs. Seton Hall
St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement...“For having a BIG EAST game this early and where we were a week ago, I was really, really pleased with our effort. I felt good coming into the game just from our preparation from this past week. I could tell right away that we were locked in, and, obviously, [there] is still [plenty] to work on. This was massive for us to be able to turn the page from a week ago. Every single possession is the way that we want to attack every game moving forward. This was a big step for us. [I’m] really proud of these guys. It was really a team win.
On getting a win after last week...
“It feels great, but it’s another game. In some ways, we have to continue to get better. It’s still early. We’re not [at] full strength. A lot of teams aren’t, and we’re still trying to get ourselves right. To be able to do what we did coming off of three straight losses, I feel more satisfied about that than who we played or what the game was about.”
On Danielle Cosgrove...
“I thought Danielle Cosgrove took the right shots at the right time, made a big one. We weren’t sure how she would be at center. We have been playing her at forward with the way we’ve been playing. Danielle fought today, and playing 30 minutes is a lot.”
On team depth..
“Unique [Drake] and Camree [Clegg] won’t get a lot of credit [for] today, but I thought that both of them did a great job. When Camree needed a blow, Unique came in, and I thought [she] was terrific. She had a big layup, a tough layup in the lane. Camree started the game off well for us. Even for Sarah [Zabrecky] to be a part of it is important for us because it gave Kadaja time to rest in the first half. I think we have more, and I’m glad that these guys were able to step up.
Junior Guard Leilani Correa
On getting ready for this game…
“I think in Florida we weren’t at our best at all and I think everybody saw that. So just getting back and getting in the gym and working on the little things that we need to work on and really just having a defensive mindset coming into this game and shutting the people down that we need to shut down is part of it.”
On the difference between conference and non-conference games…
“I think we try to be consistent in most of our games but definitely it being the first conference game, I think we both changed our mindsets a little bit coming from Florida. Just getting back into the winning mindset, team mindset, playing together as a family, that’s the switch that needed to be flipped.”
Senior Guard Kadaja Bailey
On moving forward with non-conference games…
“All of it’s the same, following the game plan and basically just staying all together as a team, focusing on what we need to focus on to move forward.”
