St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella spoke with the media following the team’s 65-47 win on Sunday over Providence
St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement…
“I thought that our players did a good job of just trying to play smarter today than we have and executing the gameplan. We switched defenses, we tried to kind of milk as much as we could at times, but I thought we were aggressive in that way. I thought that we just played physical today in every aspect of how we guarded and rebounded for the first time. Some fouls are going to come with that, some of those I thought were deserved, but others we probably caused on our own. With the way that we played today, I thought it was a long-time coming and something that I had been hoping to see all year in that we were combative in a way, took them out of some things and made them uncomfortable.”
On Rayven Peeples…
“I thought that she even left some points on the floor and she played really well. Her hands and feet are quicker than you think, and she is a great finisher around the basket. I kind of look at her like Maya Singleton in a way not so much because of how they play, but probably in the same track where Maya came on late in her first season and was able to break through the following year.”
On Leilani Correa…
“I told her to just let the game come to her. She probably makes more tough shots than easy shots, and she was great. She had a double-double and even with Rayven Peeples being able to have a double-double, I thought that Leilani let it come to her today and didn’t try to force it too much. She was able to finish the deal there and get some big baskets in big moments.”
On the upcoming game against Georgetown…
“They are tough and gritty, and we have to be ready to play and be as physical as we were and also keep our legs. We have a lot of games in a short period of time, so we just have to be smart about how we prepare. They are playing better than their record shows, so we have to be ready to play.”
On moving into second on the all-time wins list…
“I have been a part of a lot of wins, not just as a head coach but also as an assistant over my time here. It is a pretty cool feeling, and obviously we hope for more to come. It is still about the players that have been through our program and what they have believed in back in 2002 when we started, even as a graduate assistant and an assistant coach, and even now a head coach. I couldn’t be prouder of them, and even more importantly our staff, and we celebrate that with everybody. I will probably think about it more than when I am home, but in the season that we have had with bright moments, I think that this will be one for sure.”
