POSTGAME QUOTES: St. John's vs. Temple
St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella, redshirt senior guard Jayla Everett and redshirt senior forward Rayven Peeples to the media after a 66-54 win over Temple on Wednesday
St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement…
“Obviously, I don’t think it was a pretty game, but if you can make it ugly and win, we’re okay with that too. I was pleased with our second half effort. I thought we came out of the locker room and executed the things we talked about and made a couple of adjustments. I thought we played harder and we played tougher. I thought that’s where we got outmatched in the first half today, and we were certainly tougher in the second half. Having the fourth quarter we had to finish the game was great. It was great to watch [Rayven Peeples] do what she did today with her double-double. I’m really pleased with our effort in the back half of the game.
On the 3-0 start…
“Winning is fun. I’m happy for them. I think they’ve worked really hard. The things that we’re seeing are the things that we saw in the summer. I don’t think we’ve played our best either. I think we have a lot of room to grow and build chemistry. I think the ability to wear people down will benefit us toward the end of the year. I’m pleased that we’ve played against many different styles. It’s continuing to prepare us for a tough conference [schedule]. Being 3-0 is great, but the next game is the most important. That’s how we look at it.”
On the adjustments made at halftime…
“We were getting hurt in the paint. If we were going to lose the game, it was going to be because of rebounding, paint points and not getting back in transition. We weren’t doing any of those things well. We tried to clean that up. We thought we had the ability to go inside a little bit more. They played harder. The message to the team was play tougher than the opponent. We needed to play with more energy. We needed to play harder. The message was clear: we had to play harder, and I thought we did that.”
Redshirt senior forward Rayven Peeples
On scoring a career-high 18 points tonight …
“I felt really good. I just wanted to win and everyone on the floor wanted to win too.”
Redshirt senior guard Jayla Everett
On what has been working for her offensively during her time at St. John’s …
“We have been moving the ball around and having confidence in my teammates is really helping me offensively.”
