St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement…
“I was pleased that we were able to play better in the second half. I thought the first and third quarters paced the game for us in a game where I thought we could have been a lot sharper. I’m proud of our effort. We continue to move the needle and compete like we have. I’m proud of our guys, and we’ll turn the page as we have a small break before our game against Providence.”
On improving before the next game…
“We have to be detailed in what we’re doing. I think our pace is hurting us a little bit. I have to address that. These guys are so talented. They have to be able to get out and go and be able to react to what people do. In certain games, we’ve done a good job of valuing the ball and keeping our turnovers down, and we’ve had high assist numbers.”
On the balanced scoring…
“I think it’s great, the versatility we have. It’s not just one player; you have to account for a number of them. I thought a couple of our guys, who had been pretty good, struggled, but with that being said, we have other players who can step up. We don’t have that drop off once we go to the bench. I think it’s great to have that versatility and be able to attack different kinds of looks.”
Redshirt senior forward Jayla Everett
On the team’s defensive efforts today.…
“I think everyone wants to do it. When everyone is bought in, we play well. Everyone bought in today and we are playing well.“
On the energy she brings to the team…
“I can’t play my game unless I bring that energy, which is how I pick myself up as well.”
Graduate guard Mimi Reid
On the team’s struggles in the first half …
“We have to come out better and at a high level, at the start, finish and in the middle. I think once we got it rolling and started to calm down and play at our pace and do what we do, you saw that in the third quarter. Obviously, what we displayed today wasn’t who we are, but when we win we move forward and learn from today. “
On becoming a leader for her team ...
“It’s in my nature to be the calm-cool and collected one. Just constantly putting it in my teammates heads that we are good enough and we have to present that on the floor every day at a high level.”
