Opening statement…
“[It was] an ugly game. We didn’t play great, and I thought we played the way they wanted to play in the first half. It took us a while to get ourselves to place where we were showing how we play. I’m really pleased with how we played in the fourth quarter. I thought our toughness level changed. We were able to alter shots which made them hesitate a bit more. I thought we played tougher in the fourth quarter. They [Providence] always do a good job in how they play. I’m pleased with their effort. Jayla [Everett] and Rayven [Peeples] made big shots, [grabbed] big rebounds and made big plays in a game where we didn’t manufacture as many points. We were able to find a way. I’m proud of them, and now we have to turn and get ready for Wednesday.
On the game…
“The game was disjointed. I thought it was probably the most physical game we’ve played. We had an inability to get to the line. Then all of the sudden in the fourth quarter, we were in the bonus within two minutes and 30 seconds. I thought that [the lack of free throws] didn’t help our cause with how we played. They do a good job of being very deliberate in what they do and where they want you to go. They always make it difficult in how they guard at times, but I thought we didn’t have the energy we needed. For us to be able to play the way we played in the fourth quarter was real testament to the perseverance that we have.”
On the three blocks in the fourth quarter…
“I thought it set the tone in how we needed to play. Jayla was able to be under control and disciplined, and [she] jumped at the right time. She’s obviously a tremendous player in how she does things on both ends of the floor. Rayven had a big one too. We were able to make that quick run because of it. Even when they scored to cut the lead, we were able to come back down and get another basket which I thought was huge. I thought we did a good job of making them burn their timeouts, even when they were winning.”
On the depth in the frontcourt…
“It certainly allows to have room for slippage. This was the first game where we’ve had to play that way where we were in trouble a little bit. They were playing smaller, so it didn’t always have to be the two Danielle’s [Cosgrove and Patterson] that were out there. They give us a buffer there to help. If we play the way we’re capable of, we have the ability to be deeper at times.”
Redshirt senior forward Jayla Everett
On her 21-point effort…
“I let the game come to me. My teammates build up my confidence in the moments that they want me to step up “
Redshirt senior forward Rayven Peeples
On her nine second half rebounds …
“I think in the first half, we weren’t doing well with rebounding. Therefore, in the second half I tried to get every rebound that I could. “
On stepping up with Archer in first half foul trouble ...
“Obviously Jillian [Archer] is a great rebounder for our team and since was out, I just had to focus on rebounder more to help us win.
