POSTGAME QUOTES: St. John’s at Seton Hall
St. John’s Head Coach Mike Anderson and senior center Joel Soriano spoke with the media following an 88-66 loss to Seton Hall at Prudential Center on Saturday
St. John’s Head Coach Mike Anderson
Opening Statement…
“We lost today by 22 and it didn't go as planned. We didn’t do a good job of executing the game plan. Leading up to this game, Seton Hall hadn't won a conference game and they were hungry. I thought we came out flat and I'll take the blame for that. Evidently, I didn't do a good job preparing our guys. ... They did everything they had to do, especially in the second half. I thought in the first half we were on point in terms of what we wanted to establish. We kept them out of the lane and made them take difficult shots. They made some threes early on, but at the same time I thought our defense was keeping us right there. They hit that shot at the buzzer of the first half and they kept that momentum into the second half. I am very disappointed and I will take the blame for not doing a good job preparing our guys."
On today’s game against Seton Hall…
“First of all, when Seton Hall made a big run, we weren't able to execute. We didn't hit shots and we missed a lot of layups. On defense, with the physicality that takes place in the BIG EAST, rebounding and controlling loose balls, there were a lot of missed opportunities in the second half."
On the team’s adversity…
“We haven't responded to adversity well this season. We are in an adverse situation right now and we have to be able to turn the tables. When the going gets tough, we have to get going. We are just having some issues doing that and it will take our whole team pulling in the same direction to turn it around."
On Seton Hall scoring runs…
“We had some bad turnovers that created easy opportunities for them. They responded with some quick shots. When you don't score, our defense lets up a little bit and we were unable to come back from that."
On where the team stands nearing midway point …
“I think we have some work to do, especially when adversity comes. We have to be tougher, that's the bottom line.”
St. John’s Center Joel Soriano
On the common struggles of the last three losses…
“We didn't have the same energy in the second half that we did in the first half. We started off the game pretty well, but they had more fight than us and we have to play with more heart.”
On what needs to happen to get back in the win column…
“When adversity hits, we have to be tougher. We have to be more mentally prepared than this and play as a unit. None of the games are going to be easy, road or home, and we just have to be a lot better prepared.”
On the outlook of the remainder of the season…
“It's very early in the season. We have 16 games left and we are going to turn it around. It is a new year, a fresh start for us and we will come out and play harder."
