POSTGAME QUOTES: St. John's vs. Iona
St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella, graduate student forward Jillian Archer and graduate student forward Danielle Patterson spoke to the media following a 77-51 win over Iona on Thursday night
St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement…
“I’m pleased with our effort in the way that we competed tonight coming off of Sunday’s game. I think this team [Iona] is much better than their record, and I think they’re going to do pretty well in their league with some of the talent they have. I thought we did a good job of imposing our will. I thought we played the style we needed to play in order to be successful. I thought, in the third quarter, we came out and put it to them which set the tone for the rest of the game. I thought Danielle [Patterson] had a great second half, especially rebounding. [She] hit some big threes for us and stayed under control. We have another short turnaround for Sunday. I’m proud of these guys.”
On what’s changed about this year’s team from last year’s team…
“[There’s] a competitive nature that they’ve bred amongst each other. It is a mentality in how we want to compete, but we do that every day in practice. These kids have worked really hard since the summer. Obviously, we have a long way to go, but the one thing that they do is they play hard. It’s exciting to watch. Certainly, we have a lot of new faces, so there’s a big difference. We’ll continue to build.”
On the transfers…
“It’s part of what we try to find [in the portal]. We try to find the right personalities and the right mentality. These guys [Jillian Archer, Jayla Everett and Mimi Reid] have brought that in, but you can’t downplay the returners. When you look at the team we have and the guys that have been here, I’ll probably never another Kadaja Bailey that plays five years here. Mimi and Jayla played at a high level, and we were very familiar with Jillian and how she can play. Their mentality is because of who they are as a group, not just one individual. It’s enjoyable to coach, and it’s exciting.”
On the rebounding…
“It’s a way to get more points. We’re trying to guard as best we can, but when you can manufacture some points and get to the line, it’s massive. Jillian’s done a good job with it, but Rayven has become a better rebounder. We also had 17 assists, and those 17 assists are positive number. It’s certainly another dimension to our team that allow us to manufacture some points.”
Graduate forward Jillian Archer
On her season-high 19 points…
“I am thankful for my team. They found me when I was open. I was just trying to be in the right spots, and they were looking for me which is definitely reassuring.“
On how her experience helps her lead the team…
“We have a lot of leaders on this team. Everyone is able to bring their own experience. I have experience playing in the BIG EAST already, being able to share that and staying open to what other people have to say.”
Graduate forward guard Danielle Patterson
On the difference from this year and last year’s team …
“Our mentality. It’s change drastically from last year. Losing is just not acceptable to us. We hold ourselves to a really high standard every day in practice, and when it comes to the game it really shows. “
On shooting three-for-three from three-point land ...
“My teammates were finding me, I just put them up, something I practice all the time and I was shooting with confidence.”
