Opening statement...
“[I’m] really proud of our group. To come off the game we had on Friday, [we were] in a game that, I thought, we probably played the way we wanted to defensively in the first half. To be in the situation we were in coming off the way the we played on Friday, [I’m] really proud of our effort. We didn’t give up. Today, we played with toughness. Obviously the two young ladies to my left and right [Camree Clegg and Rayven Peeples] had a big part in that. [I’m] happy they can have this feeling, especially having to go to overtime and being able to close the game like we did. It was a BIG EAST basketball game: ugly, but thankfully we were able to pull it out.”
On the message to the team after the loss to Creighton…
“In all my time here, I hadn’t been a part of a game or a part of a team that had happen to them. It was about respecting the jersey that they wear and the pride they should have anytime they step on the floor. Creighton, obviously, is a very good team, and we caught buzzsaw on a Friday. I said to them that today was going to show us what we’re about more than Friday. We answered the bell. The team I know that we have showed up today, and if didn’t we probably would not have been able to win, especially in overtime. I was pleased with how we responded. We bounced back the way we needed to.
On Camree Clegg…
“Camree is one of the great kids I’ve coached. I have no fear of what her future will be in the world. I think she will be very successful in whatever she chooses to do as she continues on in her career. For her to be in a game like today and be 6-of-7 [from the floor]. You don’t get more efficient [than that]. She was probably as efficient as she has ever been in a game for us as far as shooting the ball. I’m happy for her. She shows up every day and works hard. [She] always has a great attitude. I’m happy for her and that we won the game for her too. I’m proud of the way she played, especially in overtime. She was knocking down shots left and right. It was great day for her and for us to be able to get a win.”
Graduate student guard Camree Clegg
On how she felt going into overtime…
“I just felt good. I felt like my teammates were able to trust me enough to find me open and to take those shots. As long as they have confidence in me, that boosts my confidence.
Senior forward Rayven Peeples
On her defensive effort…
“I think that’s part of my role on this team is being a big rebounder. We’ve kind of struggled with giving up offensive rebounds, so I wanted to get as many boards as I could to help my team win.”
On the potential game-winning shot that did not count…
“It was crazy, but I wish it would have counted. I’m glad we pulled through in overtime.”
