POSTGAME QUOTES: St. John’s vs. Marquette

St. John’s Head Coach Mike Anderson
Opening Statement…
“You knew you were going to get two teams that wanted to move the ball up and down the floor. That’s what Marquette did, especially in the second half. I thought we did a good job in the first half of being in on their shooters. In the second half, their shooters got some open looks. Our defense was not where it should be, especially in the second half. They got easy opportunities in transition and that’s one of the things we harped on: getting back on defense. Let’s give credit to Marquette. They’re a team that has been playing well. We came up a little short.”
On the starting lineup…
“I wanted to see what those guys would bring to the table. I thought those guys did a pretty good job of coming out and getting us into what we needed to get into, defensively and offensively. I always talk about having eight starters. It gave opportunities to Dylan [Addae-Wusu] and O’Mar [Stanley] along with David [Jones], Montez [Mathis] and Joel [Soriano]. I thought they came out and defended and did a good job of getting us going.”
On Drissa Traore…
“We wanted energy. I thought energy was something that has been lacking with our team, and he gave us some great energy and some great minutes out there.”
On stopping extended scoring runs…
“We have to be able to score. I looked up and we had scored eight points at the 11-minute mark [in the second half]. You have to be able to execute and score, and we didn’t score early on. I thought that put a lot of pressure on our defense. Marquette’s guys can knock shots down and they were making some shots.”
Senior center Joel Soriano
On last three games…
“We have to finish out games. We played a great first half. We have to play better defense. They killed us in the second half on 3-pointers. We knew they were going to come out with more energy in the second half. It's really on us, we just half to play harder in the second half and play better defense.”
On the team’s message ahead of Providence…
“We don’t like to lose, just like anyone in this world. It's very frustrating and we are trying to get out of this hump. We are going to take it game-by-game and just keep working, we will get out of it.”
Junior guard Dylan Addae-Wusu
On the team’s defense…
“We individually have to take pride in our one-on-one defense and as a team we have to know what the other four on the court are doing.”
