St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement…
“I thought we were sluggish out of the gate. [In] the second quarter, it was good to get contributions from our bench, giving us energy. I thought the third quarter set the tone, and we were able to go from there. I thought we came out with better energy and focus [in the second half], and we were able to do things that we are used to being able to do. These guys [Jillian Archer and Jayla Everett] played great.”
On what sparked the 13-0 run in the third quarter…
“We were more aggressive, and we made shots, which is a big component. We got stops, and we defended without fouling. We made them adjust enough to miss shots that they might have been making in the first half. I thought they got tired a little bit. The shots they made in the first half didn’t fall [in the second half]. We shared the ball better. That quarter set the game apart for us.”
On the message coming into today’s game…
“We weren’t going to be perfect all year, but we needed to play better. I thought we prepared well enough, but I don’t think we were able to execute what we had talked about in that game [against Seton Hall]. It’s about the bounce back. It’s one game, and you have to make sure you learn from it and flush it. We have to grow from this one too. It’s about making sure we’re getting better. We have to be sharper with the stretch we have coming up.”
Graduate student forward Jillian Archer
On her mindset shooting well from the free throw line today…
“ It’s just a time where you really have to lock in and focus. As well as trying to catch your breath and focus on the open shot. “
Redshirt senior guard Jayla Everett
On her season-high effort in points…
“We practiced knowing what shots would be open and what shots to take. I feel just trusting the work that I put in beforehand to know which shots to take.
On her shooting mind set at free throw line…
“I feel like my open shots are the hardest shots on the floor. I have too much time too think about it which makes it hard.
