POSTGAME QUOTES: St. John's Women's Basketball at Creighton
St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella talks to the media after St. John’s 67-56 loss at Creighton
St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement…
“Kind of what I expected at times, but I was pretty pleased with moments from the game for us. You can't have slippage in a game like this and you can’t give up 10 threes. We didn’t check that box at all. We knew if we gave up too many, which we hadn’t done in a while, that it would be a problem. I wanted them under 70, I really wanted us over 65, as far as points in a game. When you give up three baskets at the end of each quarter, whether it was a throw-in or buckets they will retain possession, they hurt you. But again, from where we have come from and from my older guys, I’m pleased with how we played. The game and the score are not indicative either way, whether it was 15 at one point or what it was at the end of the game because of who was out there. I was pleased with our effort and we will build on it. The league is unforgiving and when you play a team as veteran and experienced as Creighton, they are going to hurt you when you relax too many times.”
On falling short of a comeback…
“We failed to get the stop. I felt really good that we had clawed our way back. Part on me, I tried to maybe change it midplay on one of those as far as where we were. We didn’t communicate well enough on those plays and that's part of the slippage that I’m talking about. I’ll take heat on some of those, but we need to be better in our communication and how we have tried to pressure without giving complete and wide-open run-outs and wide-open threes.”
On his thoughts on Jillian Archer’s performance…
“ I thought she was great man. To watch her do what she did was impressive. She played through some foul trouble and she had to defend. I think 29 or 30 minutes is always been good for her. I think her and Unique [Drake] fought valiantly for us…Jill was terrific and stayed mentally, and physically in the game.”
On Creighton guard Lauren Jensen’s impact on today’s game…
“She’s a great player, let’s be clear on that. We also just gave her shots and made her feel comfortable…Jensen’s probably played one of her better games I would say over the course of the year. In how she shot it, especially from three. She hasn’t shot it as well as she has in her career, but that doesn’t mean she can’t because I think she’s a hell of a player. She was great.”
