POSTGAME QUOTES: St. John’s vs. Marquette
St. John’s Head Coach Mike Anderson and senior center Joel Soriano spoke with the media following a 72-70 loss to Marquette on Thursday in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals
St. John’s Head Coach Mike Anderson
Opening Statement…
“What a game. I’m proud of our guys, and I’m proud of their effort and what they’ve accomplished. I love this team.”
On Marquette’s defense on Joel Soriano…
“We expected it. He was doing his job as the decoy and opening things up for other guys to make plays. He’s been getting doubled quite a bit, and we knew that.”
On the offense…
“I thought, in the first half, we did a good job of spreading the floor and making shots. In the second half, we had some lulls, and they’re [Marquette] a good team. They were going to make a run.”
On the final shot…
“We had the guys spaced out, and we wanted to get Dylan [Addae-Wusu] to the hole. He came off the screen, and they did a good job of jamming it up. Dylan did a great job of finding Posh [Alexander] on the wing.”
On the game…
“I always talk about the game being 40 minutes and not 20 minutes. Let’s give them credit. I thought Tyler [Kolek] took over in the second half. He did a good job of making plays and getting to the free-throw line. We had our chances, and that’s the beauty of March. We’re all vying for the same thing: that trophy that says BIG EAST Tournament Champions.”
Senior center Joel Soriano
On how he thought today’s game went …
“A lot of back-and-forth, definitely a very physical game. I want to give credit to them, they played hard and we just made mistakes down the stretch.”
On what Marquette changed defensively in the second half…
“In the second half, they came out more aggressive [defensively], they did a good job trapping the ball. One time I caught it in the post off the bounce, I saw like three guys. They applied more pressure [in the second half]”
On the team’s fight…
“I think we fought till the end. I give a lot of credit to our guys. Marquette just made more plays than us.
On how the team can improve heading into next year…
“Our defense, we’re a defensive team. We need to feed off of our defense… We just had to execute better.”
