QUOTES: Dribble for Victory Over Cancer
Dr. Mitchell Cairo, St. John’s President Fr. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., Head Coach Joe Tartamella and Sophomore Guard RJ Luis spoke at Dribble for Victory Over Cancer hosted by St. John’s University
Dr. Mitchell Cairo
On the success of Dribble for Victory over Cancer events…
“The good news is through all the dribble events over the last 20 years… we have raised over two million dollars in pediatric research. Supporting pediatric cancer research, in my opinion, is one of the utmost public service acts you can do in life.”
On St. John’s University as the event host…
“It has amazed me at the type of public service that comes every year from St. John’s University. This has been an incredible experience for us because I can’t imagine a better place to be a student than to be here at St. John’s University. Not only to get an incredible education… but also really learning the true meaning of public service.”
St. John’s University President Fr. Brian J. Shanley, O.P.
On the importance of service at St. John’s…
“I would like to thank all of you for your participation today. I’m really proud of being the President of a university that has the service ethic as we do here at St. John’s.”
On St. John’s and cancer research…
“My hope and my prayer is that we educate someone here at St. John’s that will help find the cure for cancer. … I know there is probably no one in this room who has not been touched by cancer. Cancer touches, unfortunately, all of our lives, and we all have a stake in what happens today.”
St. John’s Women’s Basketball Coach Joe Tartamella
On the impact of Dr. Cairo…
“This is the 13th Dribble for Victory Over Cancer and I’ve been here for all 13, which I’m really proud of. As Father [Shanley] said, we’ve all been touched by this in some way, whether it’s family or friends and nothing hits home for me more than when you're dealing with children. To know that Dr. Cairo has been fighting this fight for his entire career and he's up here thanking all of us for being here, but he’s the true hero in this room for me.”
On the impact of Dribble for Victory Over Cancer…
“The start of this partnership for me was 13 years ago, but the strongest moment was when we met a five-year-old [King Singh] who had been battling cancer since the day he was born. He's been fighting the fight since then and he's now 10. For me to see him here is living proof of why this event is so important. Getting to talk to his family about the joy they have from seeing people here and at other events, shows how important our presence and showing up is.”
St. John’s Men’s Basketball Sophomore RJ Luis
Message to those fighting cancer today…
“I just want to say, it’s great to see all you guys here. For those little kids fighting every day for their lives, I think they’re amazing. God gives the strongest battles to his toughest warriors, so I think it’s just amazing that you are all here raising money for such a good cause.”
