Postgame Quotes: St. John's vs. Marist
St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella, guard Lashae Dwyer and guard Skye Owen speak to the media after 69-49 win over Marist
St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement…
“I thought our first half was probably the best two quarters we've put together, specifically offensively, but really on both ends, in terms of how we came out. Good to be back home, obviously, after being on a three-game swing on the road, I thought our energy was terrific. I thought we were connected throughout and it was fun to watch. I mean, quite honestly, it was fun to watch how we moved the ball, were scoring it, and the activity we had defensively. So, obviously very pleased. I thought we probably pulled back too much in the second half and I'll take some blame on that. I was really pleased. I thought we did some good things, and we've got a short turnaround now against the team that just played this team just a day or two ago. So, we'll get ready for Sunday, but really proud of this group and how they were resilient, and just the level that they played out today. And proud of these two guys (Lashae Dwyer and Skye Owen) who I think are playing at a level that we know one is played at, and that one has been building toward, and so I'm just really, really proud of them.”
On the team's ability to share the basketball on offense…
“I just think today we shared it. We had more assists than we've had probably in two games combined. I mean, we had 20 assists on 25 makes. And I thought we made really good reads. I thought we took some poor shots in terms of selection, which can hurt us. Down the road, we still got to continue to work through that.”
On the team’s defensive performance…
“I thought defensively we were just really, really better than what I watched. I thought we did a really good job of staying connected and made it hard for them. We sped them up enough. We have a different challenge each game in terms of personnel, but in a way, I'm still trying to figure out different pieces, so we'll keep mixing and matching.”
On the play of Skye Owen…
“I think Skye (Owen) has been an incredible pacer for us, and to her credit, she's worked really hard. She drives me crazy, but she's found a way, and I think she's only hitting her stride, I hope, in terms of what she's going to do.”
Senior Guard Lashae Dwyer
On taking on a larger scoring role…
“Honestly, I've been waiting for this moment. I put in the work every day, so It just feels great to just be here. My teammates, they always give me confidence to take the shots, take the right shots, or make the right play. So, I would say I’m blessed to be here and blessed to be given this opportunity.”
On being back at Carnesecca Arena…
“Honestly, it's just good to be home. Like the key to this game was to come in, don't let anyone come over and take over our court. This is our home and we should not lose in our home. So, that was our mentality coming in today.”
Junior Guard Skye Owen
On starting for the Red Storm tonight…
“I feel like not much changes. I still come in the same way, with the same intensity.”
On the team’s offense clicking…
“I feel like the more games we play, the more comfortable we get with each other. You know where to hit certain people in certain spots and I feel like that helps.”
