POSTGAME QUOTES: St. John’s Men’s Basketball vs. Providence
St. John’s Head Coach Rick Pitino and Sean Conway spoke with the media after St. John’s fell to Providence, 75-72, inside Amica Mutual Pavilion on Tuesday
St. John’s Head Coach Rick Pitino
Opening Statement…
“This was a hard-fought game. You have to give Providence a lot of credit. They made their free throws down the stretch. As I looked up today during shootaround, I saw two things that made me proud. There were two Final Four [banners], 1973, I played against that team, and of course, 1987.”
On if he considered using a timeout at the end of the game…
“No, because I knew they were going to foul. I was thinking about it the entire time, but I knew they were going to foul. As long as we get a look at the basket, it’s okay, but whatever we run, they are a team who will foul.”
On the team’s mindset entering the final stretch…
“If you don’t win the next six games, you win the BIG EAST Tournament. That’s what competitors do. You keep fighting until your time comes. You never know when your time will come. Hopefully it’s this year.”
St. John’s guard Sean Conway
On the team’s mentality to win the next six games…
“I totally agree [with Coach Pitino]. That’s our mindset from here on out. We know what’s at stake. We obviously know what we are capable of as a unit and we’re going to continue to work toward that goal and take it a day at a time, a game at a time. But obviously, that is our belief from here on that we, as a unit, can achieve that.”
On what it has been like these last five weeks…
“Obviously, we have caught a couple of close games, not only the last five weeks but throughout the whole season. At the end of the day, as Coach alluded to, we still have six games left, a lot of season left. We’re not focusing on the past. I’m focused on tomorrow, the next day and the day after that. We can only control what we can. … I’m not even going to focus on any previous losses because that doesn’t matter at this point. All we can do is look at the film from tonight, learn from it, improve and be prepared for Sunday against Seton Hall.”
