St. John’s Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement…
“Obviously, pleased to get in the right column. I thought we started the game really well, and then in the second quarter, I think we kind of sputtered and had that kind of lull that we've been having during games, which I've told them I would take in the second rather than the fourth, which was the case today. I thought we really battled through it. I think we went down nine at one point and were able to come back. I thought our fortitude in the fourth was kind of how we had been in the beginning of the year, where we made the shots we had to. We still left a lot of points out there, but we put ourselves in a position to close the game and make free throws. I would have liked to have seen this make a little bit harder for them offensively at the end but in terms of us trying to scrap, to just get a win in any way, obviously very pleased with being able to get it done today.”
On Julie Bahati’s performance…
“I think all of our staff and our program root for her more than anyone in terms of her being able to be successful. So, to see her be able to get in the game today and have great minutes and obviously earn more minutes moving forward. Julie is a really incredible kid, and she shows up every day with the same attitude and work ethic. She does extra. She doesn't get to play a lot. She doesn't stop doing extra or showing up the same way every day. Today, she got a chance to take advantage of an opportunity that will help her now moving forward, but she is just a great kid, and she helped us big time. I mean, she was in there for probably longer than any of us thought she would be. But she was succeeding in being a problem for them in terms of her length, and she mitigated mistakes. So, for her to be in there and be able to get six points. I mean, we take that all day. It offsets maybe some of the players on Providence who you don't want to be able to kind of contribute as well. But now she was terrific. I mean, she's a major part of why we were able to win.”
On the feeling of finding the win column…
“Look it's not fun to have struggles and I think when you look at our team from the beginning to where we are, that it's the weirdest team I've coached because I've had to struggle early and always be good toward the end. I've never had us be really good at the beginning and then struggle toward the middle and hopefully not fully all the way to the latter half. But I thought we've played in the last couple of games…Today hopefully gives them a boost, going into the next game and shows them that if they do things remotely close to what we're trying to tell them to do, then they have a chance to win the game.”
St. John’s guard Lashae Dwyer
On the mindset down the stretch…
“Honestly, I wanted this game so bad. It's not a great feeling losing. So, I just talked to myself during the game, like, ‘You got this. Keep going.’ Just scale the negativity, even with me, down. So, I talk to myself, I like to do that, to keep myself inspired and motivated, to keep going, to keep pushing and keep motivating my team”
St. John’s guard Skye Owen
On being 5-for-5 from three….
“I mean, it felt good, and I was the hot hand. After I made the third one I said, ‘Let's shoot it again.’”
