POSTGAME QUOTES: St. John's Women's Basketball vs. No. 21/18 Oklahoma State
St. John’s Women’s Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella, junior guard Brooke Moore and senior forward Kylie Lavelle spoke to the media after the 74-67 victory over No. 21/18 Oklahoma State at Carnesecca Arena
Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement…
“I’m really proud of our guys. The way they competed today I thought was the highest level I’ve seen them play since we started in the summer. I thought we stuck to our gameplan and executed enough. There’s a lot of slippage in there that we’ve got to be better at, including finishing games at the free throw line. But I was really, really pleased.”
On moving forward…
“We played tough today. We played tough and I told them that in the locker room. I think if we can continue that we can continue getting better. We obviously need to fix a lot of things still but I’m just really proud of their effort today with the great opportunity they had to play against a ranked team at home.”
On team chemistry…
“In terms of our connectivity today, we were probably at the highest level we’ve been. We got to keep working. It’s a great win. This was a huge test for us tonight regarding where we’ve been and what we can do to validate all the work that we’ve been putting in.”
Senior forward Kylie Lavelle
On preparing for No. 18 Oklahoma State…
“They’re a three-point shooting team. They average over 20 attempts per game. We knew coming in that would be our main focus, getting them off the line and forcing them to make contested twos. I think that’s what we did tonight.”
On defeating a nationally ranked team…
“We knew that this was going to be a big game for us and it will be a big game by the end of the seasob when the tournament comes around. This will be a huge push for us, and we’re going to continue to keep pushing.”
On her shot selection…
“Our teammates found us. We executed out plays and I feel like me and [Brooke Moore] weren’t forcing any shots. We were looking for open shots, the best one we could get as a team. I thought we executed really well tonight.”
Junior guard Brooke Moore
On the team’s performance…
“I think we just showed out toughness throughout the game. We didn’t get too high, we didn’t get too low. We stayed steady and just competed. That’s all you can ask for. Oklahoma State is a great team, so we knew we had to give it our 100% and just go out there and fight.”
On what this win means going forward…
“This win was huge for our program, but we want to keep fighting and continue leveling up.”
Oklahoma State Head Coach Jacie Hoyt
On St. John’s…
“I thought they played a great ball game. They executed really well. They did exactly what they needed to do to win. We knew they were going to play a style that was very different than what we’re used to playing and I felt like they did a good job of really imposing their will.”
