POSTGAME QUOTES: ST. JOHN’S WOMEN’S BASKETBALL VS. CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE
St. John’s Women’s Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella, senior forward Kylie Lavelle and junior guard Brooke Moore spoke to the media after defeating CCSU 71-46 at Carnesecca Arena
Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement…
“It was a tough first half for us. I was a little frustrated with how we came out, but I thought we did a really good job in the second half of picking up our intensity level, our competitiveness and defense. We have to learn to be that way for 40 minutes if we want to continue improving.”
On the third quarter’s 20-0 run…
“I thought the beginning of the third quarter was a huge piece for us. Our rebounding and points in the paint really ticked up. I’m pleased with how we finished.”
On learning from mistakes in victories…
“You want to learn through wins. It’s a lot better than through losses. I was really proud of how we responded in the second half. I think that’s what we’ll take away from this game.”
On Skye Owen…
“I know what she can be for us and what she’s been for us. She’s an important piece to our team. If we want to be great, we need her to be great. She did a great job of bouncing back.”
Junior guard Brooke Moore
On the second-half turnaround…
“In the first half, we didn’t play how we usually do. We weren’t aggressive. We didn’t play our style of basketball. At halftime, Coach [Tartamella] just really emphasized playing our style of basketball, being aggressive, running the floor and just executing our plays.”
On staying grounded after beating No. 18/21 Oklahoma State…
“That was a big win, but it’s in the past now. We’re just looking to win the games we have moving forward. Tonight, it was big to come out and show that we’re still here and we can still be consistent. That was the biggest thing, to just keep applying the pressure.”
Senior forward Kylie Lavelle
On the second-half turnaround…
“Defensively in the first half, we weren’t all there. I feel like we came out in the second [half] and was game focused for the rest of the night.”
On staying grounded after beating No. 18/21 Oklahoma State …
“As a team, every game is important and how you have to play every game is different. Coming out and playing our style of basketball every game will help us regardless of the opponent.”
