POSTGAME QUOTES: ST. JOHN’S WOMEN’S BASKETBALL VS. VILLANOVA
St. John’s Women’s Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella, junior guards Beautiful Waheed and Brooke Moore spoke to the media following the Red Storm’s 71-58 win over Villanova at Carnesecca Arena.
Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement…
“The first quarter was probably the best 10 minutes we’ve played all year. We were locked in, and I’m really proud of how they played. To turn around from a difficult loss on Wednesday and perform like this was incredible.”
On what changed since the previous Villanova game…
“We played with a higher level of energy. We defended at probably the best level we’ve defended at. We rebounded at a high level, and because we were able to score, we did a much better job getting back in transition and not allowing them run-out threes.”
On the team’s collective fight…
“They competed like warriors today, even though they made some mistakes. Their level of energy and the way they played as a group was the difference.”
On handling Villanova’s pressure…
“We did a really good job handling their pressure. Outside of the last two minutes, we were aggressive against the press and that helped us score a number of points.”
On teaching intensity and consistency…
“The vibe has got to be that you play with edge, effort and physicality. When we’re successful, we do those things. When we don’t we lack it. We try to breed that every day in how we practice.”
Junior guard Brooke Moore…
On the 17-point first quarter…
“I think it started with us being connected and just playing together. A big thing for us is energy. We’re unselfish, we’re in lanes, we’re being aggressive on defense and making the extra pass.”
Junior guard Beautiful Waheed
On the team’s chemistry…
“Oh, it’s real. It’s a vibe. It’s definitely goofy. But when we need to be serious and get it done, we’re going to work together and get it done.”
