POSTGAME QUOTES: ST. JOHN’S WOMEN’S BASKETBALL VS. XAVIER
St. John’s Women’s Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella and guards Beautiful Waheed and Brooke Moore met with the media after the Red Storm’s 71-52 win over Xavier at Carnesecca Arena
Head Coach Joe Tartamella
Opening statement…
“Slow start for us at first there, in the second quarter we got it back, thought Janeya [Grant] gave us a good lift. It was a grind. We knew it would be a grind, just pleased that we were able to play the way we did. We finished really strong. The second half was great for us. We were lethargic in the first, so I was pleased with the way we finished. I thought it was a really good team effort.”
On coaching in women’s sports …
“To see the opportunities that female athletes, not just in basketball, but overall, the exposure, the expansion, the popularity, the level of play has really, I think has exploded and it's a great testament to women in sports. It wasn't easy for a lot of the trailblazers, but I think in terms of what they see today, of course, it's not where it needs to be, but I think certainly we're trending in the right direction…Kathy Mann, who was here for so many years, as a mentor and somebody who was a trailblazer in every way. I've been pretty blessed with the people that I've come across in terms of the experiences they've been able to share with me. There’s a long way to go still in many ways, but I learned something every day.”
Junior guard Beautiful Waheed
On how the team played…
"I feel like our defense gets us to the offense. Once our steals come and our rebounds come, all we do is run the floor and play as a team.”
Junior guard Brooke Moore…
On playing consistently…
“I think the main thing for me is not getting sped up and just playing at my pace. They [Xavier] do a really good job at drawing charges and stuff like that, so I feel like tonight I was just focusing on not getting a charge and playing with pace.”
