Luca Virgilio is in his fifth season working with the St. John’s men’s basketball program. Virgilio was named to the position of management analyst prior to the 2017-18 campaign after serving as assistant to the head coach in 2016-17 and previously as the program’s graduate assistant.
As the team’s management analyst, Virgilio is responsible for devising and delivering strategies to improve basketball operations by using advanced knowledge of research methods, information management, and quantitative methods to analyze all areas of the program. Virgilio assists the coaching staff by preparing analytical reports, delivering recommendations, and overseeing the implementation of these strategies for practice and training, style of play, scouting, scheduling and recruiting.
During his time as assistant to the head coach, Virgilio provided support for a variety of daily operations within the program. His responsibilities included managing the team’s schedule, organizing travel, and supervising student development activities. Virgilio also assisted with the coordination of on-campus recruiting activities, maintaining NCAA compliance-related records and other duties as assigned by the head coach. Moreover, Virgilio’s knowledge of European basketball has helped elevate the program’s presence at the international level.
As the program’s graduate assistant, Virgilio fulfilled a number of functions related to day-to-day operations, maintained the team’s calendar and held oversight responsibility of the team's managers.
In his first season with the program, Virgilio was part of St. John’s run to the 2015 NCAA Tournament. He aided both the assistant to the head coach and director of basketball operations with administrative responsibilities and team operations.
Virgilio graduated from St. John’s in May 2016, earning a graduate master’s degree in sport management with a concentration in international dimension of sport.
Hailing from Italy, Virgilio earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and business administration at Universita degli Studi di Roma Tre in 2012 and a master’s of science in Business Administration at Tor Vergata School of Economics in 2014.
