Possessing more than three decades of experience at the highest levels of college basketball, Ron Brown is in his second season on Mike Anderson’s staff at St. John’s as the team’s coordinator of basketball operations.
Brown, a Bronx native, served as the head coach of Florida A&M for three seasons from 1993-96. Upon stepping down from the head coaching role of the Rattlers, he served as an assistant athletic director in the department.
He returned to the bench after one year in his administrative role, serving as the associate head coach at Western Kentucky for the 1997-98 season. Following his brief stint in the Bluegrass State, he spent four seasons at LIU-Brooklyn, including a tenure as the team’s interim head coach toward the end of the 2001-02 season.
Following his time with the Blackbirds, Brown spent eight years on the staff of Head Coach Tom Green at FDU, serving as the program’s associate head coach. During his time in Teaneck, Brown’s teams made two postseason appearances, advancing to one NCAA Tournament and one NIT.
Brown’s last stint on a Division I staff before coming to Queens was at Binghamton, where he served as an assistant coach for two seasons ending in 2012.
Prior to his head coaching tenure at FAMU, Brown spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at West Virginia under the guidance of Gale Catlett. Brown’s teams earned four NCAA Tournament bids and made three NIT appearances during that span.
Brown played his college basketball at John Jay, where he lettered four years and served as a team captain. He earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from John Jay and pursued a master’s degree in physical education at West Virginia.
