Andrew O’Connell returned to St. John’s as a special advisor in September of 2025 following a three-year stint as Assistant Athletic Director for Strategic Communication at Fordham. At Rose Hill, O'Connell helped shape external strategy for the Rams’ 17 varsity sports with a special emphasis on men’s basketball.
Before his second go-around at Fordham, O’Connell spent eight years at St. John’s from 2014-22, beginning as assistant director of athletic communications before being twice promoted and leaving as the department’s director. He worked closely with numerous Red Storm programs during his first tenure in Queens, including men’s basketball, baseball, men’s soccer, women’s basketball and women’s soccer.
O'Connell began his career at his alma mater, Fordham, where he served from 2012-14 as the assistant sports information director responsible for women's basketball, softball, volleyball and golf. In those two years, O'Connell traveled to three separate NCAA Tournaments with the Rams, as the softball team took home a pair of Atlantic 10 titles and the women's basketball squad won the program's first-ever A-10 crown in 2013-14.
In addition to his role at the University, O'Connell also serves as a part-time member of the game night staff for the Madison Square Garden Sports Properties Division, for which he has worked several NITs, BIG EAST Tournaments, NCAA Regional Finals and championship boxing events.
A native of Elmont, N.Y., O'Connell graduated summa cum laude from Fordham University in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in American Studies.
O'Connell has deep New York basketball roots in his family. His father, the late Jim O'Connell (known to many simply as "Oc"), attended St. John's and worked at The Associated Press for 40 years, most of which were spent as the organization's lead college basketball writer. The 2002 winner of the Curt Gowdy Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, O'Connell was also inducted in the United States Basketball Writers Hall of Fame before passing away in 2018. His mother, the former Anne Gregory, scored 2,548 points and grabbed 1,999 boards during her four-year playing career at Fordham, where she was the first female inductee into the school's athletic hall of fame and still holds the crown as the school's career leader in scoring and rebounding.
O'Connell resides in Smithtown, N.Y., with his wife, Laura (Greene), who was an All-CAA soccer player at Hofstra. The couple has two children, Olivia and Thomas.
