The Red Storm play Butler, who lost 5-2 to William & Mary, on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in the final round. The win over FIU, the team St. Johns beat for the 1996 NCAA title, was the third in a row and fourth in the last five games, as the team improves to 12-3-2 overall this season. The Red Storm are now 7-1 away from home this season.
In the first half, both teams took four shots, but the Red Storm were able to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission when junior Rich Bradley (Bayport, N.Y.) took a pass from sophomore Patrick Lonergan (Millington, N.J.) and beat FIU goalkeeper Wally Crittenden one-on-one to the lower right post with 43 seconds left in the half.
In the second half, the Red Storm tied its season high for most goals in a half with three, en route to the 4-0 shutout win. Freshman Marlon Rojas (Peytonville, Arima, Trinidad) took a crossing pass from junior Shalrie Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and beat Crittenden to the far post for a 2-0 lead at the 63:58 mark. Less than 10 minutes later, Joseph took a pass from sophomore Dave ODonnell (Nashua, N.H.) and scored his team-leading 10th goal as SJUs lead grew to 3-0. At the 85:19 mark, freshman Chris Bennice (Scotia, N.Y.) scored his first career goal, on an assist from sophomore Gorgui Mbaye (Jersey City, N.J.), rebounding a shot on an open net.
Senior goalkeeper Jeffrey Stoklosa (Newark, Del.) posted his sixth shutout of the season and improved his individual record to 7-2-2 this season.
