The program’s single-season goals leader passed away at the age of 64
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer program mourns the loss of St. John's Hall of Famer Fred Bischoff, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 64.
Bischoff, who owns the program's single-season goals record, was a member of the first graduating class of the varsity men's soccer program, starring for the Johnnies from 1979-1982. The Forest Hills native ranks second at St. John's in career goals (48) and points (115) and third in shots (228).
"We are deeply saddened to hear of Fred's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bischoff family and all of his loved ones at this time," said Head Coach Dr. Dave Masur. "Fred was one of the best players in the early years of our program and still holds the record for the most goals in a single season. After graduation, he remained connected to the team, consistently showing up at games and followed along closely year after year. He will be sorely missed all of us here in the St. John's Soccer community."
Bischoff led the team in scoring during each of the program's first two seasons, tallying 12 goals apiece in 1979 and 1980. As a sophomore, the Queens native set the program single-game record for goals (5) and points (10) in a win over Fairfield on Sept. 29, 1980. His 12-goal seasons are currently tied for 10th on the St. John's single-season record list.
As an upperclassmen, he served his first of two stints as team captain in 1981 and paced the Redmen in shots with 37. During his senior season, Bischoff strung together one of the most decorated campaigns in St. John's men's soccer history. The All-New York State and Tri-State Conference First Team selection totaled 22 goals and 53 points, both all-time best marks that still stand to this day. He tallied the second five-goal game of his career against Iona on Oct. 23, 1982, and finished the year with 72 shots, which ranks the second-most in program history.
Following his graduation for St. John's in 1983, Bischoff went on to a career of service, working in the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) Ladder Company 129 in Flushing. In 2014, he was inducted into the St. John's Athletics Hall of Fame.
Visitation will be held tomorrow, May 19, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Fox Funeral Home located at 98-07 Ascan Avenue, Forest Hills, N.Y. 11375. The funeral mass will take place at Our Lady Mercy in Forest Hills at 10 a.m. For more information on the services, please click here.
