The winner of Sundays match advances to the BIG EAST semifinals, where they will face the either No. 3 seed Boston College or sixth-seeded Georgetown. The semifinals will be held on Friday, November 10 (6 p.m. and 8 p.m.) at Yurcak Field on the campus of Rutgers University. The championship game, which will be televised locally on MSG, will be held at noon on Sunday, November 12.
The Red Storm finished the regular season with a 13-3-2 overall record and were second, behind Connecticut, in the BIG EAST with an 8-2-1 mark. They beat Rutgers, the tournaments seventh-seed, 1-0, on the road earlier this season.
St. Johns finished the regular season with 10 shutouts, which is tied for the fifth-best mark in school history. Senior Omar Chavez (New Rochelle, N.Y.) has led a stingy defensive unit that allowed only nine goals this season, one of the best marks in school history. Senior goalkeeper Jeffrey Stoklosa (Newark, Del.) has an 8-2-2 record this season, with seven shutouts and a miniscule 0.44 goals against average, which ranks first in the BIG EAST. Junior Shalrie Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led St. Johns and ranked fourth in the BIG EAST with 11 goals and two assists for 24 points.
The team closed out the regular season this past weekend, beating Florida International and Butler to win the Golden Panther Classic in Boca Raton, Florida. In the National Soccer Coaches Association rankings released on Monday, the Red Storm were ranked seventh nationally, while the team moved up to sixth in the mens soccer media poll.
Directions to Mitchel Field and pertinent game information will be provided later this week.
