STORM CLOBBER ST. FRANCIS IN SEASON OPENER
11/17/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The Storm broke this one open early in the first half with a 20-0 run over a span of over eight minutes, and the Terriers never recovered. St. Francis connected on just six field goals in the first half, as the Storm owned a 37-19 advantage at the break. The Terriers would get no closer than 19 (44-25) the rest of the way, as the Storm cruised to the victory. St. Johns capitalized at the free throw line, making 23 of 30 foul shots on the night, in addition to shooting 45.9 percent from the floor.
The 37 points scored by St. Francis was the fewest allowed by a St. Johns team since the 1978-79 season, when the Storm defeated Dominican, 74-34. It was also the largest margin of victory (46 points) in a season opener since November 26, 1981 when the Storm started off the season with a 102-54 victory over New Brunswick (margin of victory - 48 points).
Thompson was one of four SJU players in double figures on the night and led a very balanced attack in which all 10 players to get in the game scored at least four points. Senior tri-captain Crystal Bowen (Las Vegas, Nev./Lassen College) came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points, while juniors Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) and Telisha Warner (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./S. Broward) each contributed 10. Warner also led the Storm with eight rebounds and five assists, both tying her career best. Freshman Nora Gyuris (Pecs, Hungary/Babits Mihaly) made three-of-five from the floor for seven points in her collegiate debut, while freshman Sherri Brown (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) added five points and four rebounds in her first college game.
The Storm return to action on Monday, November 20, when they travel to St. Peters for a non-conference game with the Peahens at 7:30.
