The Red Storm (2-2) got the offense going early in this one, jumping out to a 12-2 lead in the first four minutes over UAPB (0-3). SJU would extend that lead to 21-6 at the 12:29 mark and would maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the half. St. John's led 39-27 at the break, after shooting 42.9 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, the Golden Lions started to chip away at the SJU lead, and outscored the Red Storm 10-2 in the opening minutes. But the Red Storm then made a run of the own, as senior Tynisha Myles (Paterson, N.J.) and Brown combined to score 10 unanswered points, giving St. John's a 51-37 advantage. Arkansas-Pine Bluff got no closer than six the rest of the way, and the Red Storm came away with the 10-point victory.
Brown, who has scored in double figures in each of the Red Storm's first four games, hit five-of-10 from the floor including a pair of three-pointers, in addition to nailing all five free throw attempts. Myles finished with 14 points, 10 of which came in the second half. She also collected three steals. Senior Crystal Bowen (Las Vegas, Nev.) chipped in nine points, two assists and a steal, while junior Telisha Warner (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) tallied eight points, five rebounds and a pair of assists. Senior Eukeisha Iton (Miami, Fla.) totaled eight points, three steals and three rebounds, and freshman Sherri Brown (Willingboro, N.J.) added five points and a team-high six rebounds. As a team, the Red Storm connected on 44.4 percent of their shots, and converted 21 of 24 free throws.
St. John's will be back in action on Wednesday, November 29 when they travel to St. Joseph's College for a 6:00 non-conference game.
