Defending conference champion Rutgers received four first place votes, 91 overall, and was picked second, followed by conference newcomer Virginia Tech, who received one first place vote, and 77 votes overall. Seton Hall was selected fourth, with Boston College and Connecticut tied for fifth, and the Red Storm seventh. West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Villanova and Georgetown rounded out the selections.
St. Johns finished the 2000 season 29-22 overall and stood in eighth place in the BIG EAST with an 8-15 conference record, the first time Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer finished under .500 in the conference in his five years at the helm.
The Red Storm enter the 2001 season with a young squad featuring only two seniors, first baseman Chris Fallon (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) and catcher Eric Potts (Little Ferry, N.J./Ridgefield Park). Fallon led St. Johns with 16 home runs, tying the school record for most in a season, and 57 RBI, which ranked fourth in the BIG EAST. Potts, who played left field last year, will take over behind the plate after hitting .344 with 11 doubles, four home runs and 38 RBI.
St. Johns opens the 2001 season playing at the College of Charleston on February 17, 2001.
