The Bulls remain undefeated on the season at 8-0, while the Red Storm fall to 4-4.
The Red Storm, ranked fifth in the BIG EAST conference in scoring defense (57.6 ppg) played stingy defense throughout but were unable to get their offense clicking consistently. St. Johns owned a six-point lead midway through the first half at 15-9, but could not hold it as the Bulls went on a 15-4 run to close out the half and led 24-19 at the break.
Buffalo led by as many as 11, but with 9:05 left in the game, the Red Storm made their move. Junior Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J.) hit a short jumper and freshman Sherri Brown (Willingboro, N.J.) drained a three-pointer to cut the Bull lead to four (44-40). Buffalo would extend its lead to seven (52-45) with just under three minutes to play when St. Johns threatened again. The Red Storm got a couple of good defensive stops at the other end and got the ball to Rasheedah Brown, who knocked down her first three-pointer of the afternoon to pull SJU to within four again, this time with just 1:02 left on the clock. The Bulls however hit three-of-four free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Rasheedah Brown led all scorers with a career-high 19 points, making her the only St. Johns player to score in double figures in all eight games this season. Brown, who scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half, also had seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Senior Katrina Johns (Baltimore, Md.) recorded her first double double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Buffalo had four players reach double figures, led by Tiffany Bells team-high 13. St. Johns, ranked 17th in the country in free throw percentage, hit seven-of-eight from the line in the losing effort.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Thursday, December 28 when they take on Rhode Island at 6:00 in the first round of the Dartmouth Classic in Hanover, N.H.
