St. John's falls to 4-5 on the season, while the Rams improve to 6-4. The Red Storm led for virtually the entire game and forced 23 Ram turnovers, but Rhode Island was able to cash it in at the free throw line down the stretch to earn the victory. The Red Storm came out strong in the first half, nailing 40.0 per cent of their shots to assume a 31-23 lead the the break. Halfway through the first half and clinging to a 13-11 lead, SJU went on a 9-0 run to assume a 20-11 lead with 8:35 to play. The Rams would pull to within four with just over three minutes to play, but the Red Storm made another push to extend their lead to double figures again, and led by eight at intermission.
Rhode Island opened the second half with a 9-2 run to close the gap to just two (34-32) at the 16:11 mark. The Red Storm would hold the lead until the 7:41 mark when URI's Denise King made one of two free throw attempts to tie the game at 47-47. King also gave her squad its first lead of the game on the next possession when she again converted one of two foul shots. The Rams eventually began to pull away and led by as many as 12 with 1:39 to play.
The Red Storm would not surrender and continued to play aggressive defense. A pair of consecutive layups by junior Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J.) cut the Ram lead to 65-61 with :12 to play, but it was too little too late as the Rams converted a pair of free throws on the next trip down the court to seal the victory.
Brown finished with a team-high 18 points, 13 of which came in the second half. This marks the ninth consecutive game in which she has reached double figures in scoring. Freshman Sherri Brown (Willingboro, N.J.) came off the bench to score a career-best 13 points, including three three-pointers. Senior Tynisha Myles (Paterson, N.J.) fouled out with 11 points, while senior Eukeisha Iton (Miami, Fla.) chipped in with four points and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Telisha Warner (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), who had been sidelined for the last three games, came back and earned a start against URI, contributing four points, four assists, five rebounds and five steals.
The Red Storm will be back in action tomorrow evening when they take on host Dartmouth College at 8:00 in the second round of the Restaurant Group Classic.
