Red Storm Split in Home Opener

The Red Storm opened a four game home stand against Yale University at Queens College, Flushing, NY. In the first game of a double header, St. John's defeated Yale 1-0. Freshman Jessica Shepherd led off the third inning with a single. Sophomore Ann Raab followed with a single, then senior Jen D'Ambrosio advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. With one out, junior Lauren Fisher hit a hard ball to shortstop, which gave enough time for Shepherd to cross the plate and produce the only run of the game. Junior Gina Calabrese through her seventh complete game of the season to improve her recorded to 7-4. Calabrese recorded three strikeouts in the game to become St. John's all time strikeout leader, passing Liz Stanton's mark of 282 set in 1997. In the second game, the Red Storm fell to Yale 4-0. The Bulldogs came out strong, scoring three runs in the first inning. Kathy Ching reached base on an era and Alice Liu advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Ching stole third and advanced home on an era. With one out, Monica Lebron walked and Carlie Ware was hit by a pitch. Kristen Maturo hit a double to score Lebron and Ware. St. John's had no answer and was held to two hits. Freshman Courtney Fitzgerald recorded the loss and dropped her record to 1-7.
