Red Storm Falls to Monmouth

The Red Storm (9-13) visited West Long Branch, NJ to face Monmouth University (11-1). St. John's was defeated by the Hawks, 3-2. In the first inning St. John's came out swinging, when sophomore Lisa Tropea and sophomore Ann Raab hit back to back doubles to open the scoring and take 1-0 lead. The Hawks answered in the fourth inning when Steffanie Tyska crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Maleka Brown. The game was tied 1-1 following seven innings, forcing the game to resort to a tiebreaker, a runner is placed at second base to begin the inning. In the top of the ninth inning after both teams failed to cross the plate in the eighth, St. John's Cecelia Baston was placed at second, eventually scoring on an RBI by Courtney Nilan. In the bottom of the ninth, Maryann Soares hit a two-run home run off of junior Gina Calabrese (8-5) to win the game. The teams attempted to play the second game of the double header, only to have action halted following the fourth inning with the Red Storm leading 2-0. The game was declared no contest since five innings weren't completed.
