St. John's Softball Sweeps Army

FLUSHING, N.Y. - St. John's (14-14) was home on March 29 to take on the Lady Knights of Army (11-11) in a non-conference match-up. In the first game, the Red Storm defeated the Lady Knights 8-0. In the fifth inning, sophomore Lisa Tropea (3-for-4) reached base on an error by third baseman Sarah Thornton. Freshman Alicia Argeras followed with a double to left field to score Tropea. Two batters later, sophomore Ann Raab reached base on a fielders choice, giving enough time for Argeras to cross the plate. Junior Jeanine Giammarino led off the sixth inning with a walk. Giammarino advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Amy Crook. Pinch runner, senior Susan D'Ambrosio, scored on a single by her sister Jennifer D'Ambrosio. Lisa Tropea hit a single and was followed by Alicia Argeras, who was hit by a pitch, to load the bases. Jennifer D'Ambrosio advanced home when freshman Jessica Shepherd walked. Ann Raab collected two RBI with a single to end the game due to the eight run mercy rule. Junior Gina Calabrese struck out nine and limited Army to two hits to improve her record to 10-6. In the night cap, the Red Storm completed the sweep, beating the Lady Knights 5-1. In the fourth inning, sophomore Marilyn Brown (2-for-3) hit a double down the right field line and two batters later, Jeanine Giammarino hit a double to score her. Jeanine was replaced by pinch runner Susan D'Ambrosio and was drove in by sophomore Amy Crook. With two outs in the fifth inning, Jessica Shepherd hit a double and scored on a single by Ann Raab. Marilyn Brown then hit a single to left field to drive in Raab. Freshman Courtney Fitzgerald (4-7) continued her winning ways, pitching her seventh complete game of the season, striking out seven and only giving up four hits. Fitzgerald is currently on a three game winning streak.
