Red Storm Softball Sweeps Terriers

This was the eighth ever meeting between the two teams with St. John's leading the series 8-0.
In the first game St. John's defeated St. Francis 5-1. With two outs in the first inning St. John's opened the scoring. Sophomore Tiffany Howerton and sophomore Ann Raab hit back-to-back singles to left field. Sophomore Marilyn Brown followed with a hard hit ball to shortstop, which cause an error and gave enough time for Raab to cross the plate. In the fourth inning St. John's rallied to score three more runs. With no outs and runners on second and third, Tiffany Howerton hit a single to record two RBI. Howerton advanced home on a single by Marilyn Brown to give the Red Storm a 4-0 lead. To avoid the shutout the Terriers managed to get a run back in the bottom of the fourth. St. John's collected another run in the top of the seventh to assure the victory. Gina Calabrese tossed a two hitter and completed her 17 game of the season to improve her record to 14-9.
To close out the night, the Red Storm beat the Terriers 4-1. With one out in the top of the third inning, freshman Alesha Argeras hit a triple to right field. Tiffany Howerton hit a single to right field to score Aregeras. With two outs in the fourth inning, sophomore Cecelia Baston hit a single and advanced to third on a double hit by junior Lauren Fisher. Cecelia scored on a passed ball. The Red Storm added two more in the sixth inning. Tiffany Howerton (3-for-6) recorded her fourth RBI of the day. St. Francis' biggest threat came in the bottom of the third inning with bases loaded and one out. Freshman southpaw Courtney Fitzgerald was able to get out of the jam by popping up and striking out the last two batters of the inning. Fitzgerald (6-8) struck out six and only let up five hits. Courtney is currently on a three game winning streak.
St. John's is currently on a five game winning streak and will resume BIG EAST play this Saturday at Providence College.
