Pittsburgh Tops SJU Men's Soccer, 1-0

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Senior midfielder Chad Porter scored nearly nine minutes into the game and Pittsburgh was able to hold off a late rally by second-ranked St. John's, winning a BIG EAST Conference men's soccer match, 1-0, at DaSilva Memorial Field. The Red Storm, ranked second nationally in the NSCAA poll, fall to 3-1 this season and 1-1 in the conference.Senior Ben Garry took a pass from back Chris Churchhill and crossed the ball to Porter in front of the net, who beat St. John's freshman goalkeeper Bill Gaudette (Hummelstown, Pa.) at the 81:04 mark to give the Panthers the lead.The Red Storm, who had posted three straight wins to start the season, highlighted by winning the UCONN Soccer Classic, had opportunities, tallying 13 shots on goal, but could not connect.With six seconds remaining in the game, senior Anthony Theorides (Astoria, N.Y.) nearly tied the game with a header, but Pittsburgh keeper Justin Gaul, who had seven saves on the night, made a diving stab to deflect the shot and preserve the win.
