St. John's attacked the Wildcats early and often, peppering VU goalkeeper Sean Teesdale with five shots during the first nine minutes of play. The Red Storm netted their first goal when sophomore Patrick Lonergan (Millington, N.J.) crossed a ball to Szewczyk in the box and the freshman put it past Teesdale for a 1-0 lead at the 9:51 mark. Then, at the 12:05 mark, Matteo one-timed a ball off of a broken cross and gave SJU a 2-0 lead at the half.
In the second half, the offensive onslaught continued for the Red Storm. Matteo netted his second goal of the game at the 51:09 mark. Lonergan crossed a ball to the box, where it found Matteo who, in traffic, put a shot past Villanova goalkeeper Patrick Walsh for a 3-0 lead.
After Villanova (2-4, 0-2) scored to make it 3-1, junior Shalrie Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) shot from the top of the box at the 82:17 mark increased the margin to 4-1. Szewczyk added his second of the game at the 83:22 mark, picking up a loose ball and beating the VU keeper one-on-one.
St. John's freshman goalkeeper Bill Gaudette (Hummelstown, Pa.) picked up his second-consecutive win, making a pair of outstanding saves in the second half.
The Red Storm, ranked seventh nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, are off until Friday, when they play at West Virginia.
