Chavez, Matteo Earn BIG EAST Honors

Matteo, a junior who was selected to the BIG EAST preseason team, scored two goals in St. John's 5-1 win over Villanova on Sunday. He scored his first goal of the game at the 12:05 mark, one-touching a ball from a broken cross. Matteo scored another goal six minutes into the second half, giving the Red Storm an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
Chavez, a senior back, earns BIG EAST Defensive honors for the second time this season. He led a Red Storm defense that limited two BIG EAST opponents to a combined 14 shots in a pair of victories. During St. John's 2-0 win over Syracuse on Wednesday, Chavez scored on a header, his second collegiate goal.
The Red Storm, ranked seventh in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and eighth by Soccer America, are 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the BIG EAST. St. John's plays at West Virginia on Friday.
