Maurer anchored a St. Johns team that reached the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament this season. One of the leaders on a defensive unit that registered 10 shutouts, Maurer scored an unassisted goal to give St. Johns a 1-0 win over then No. 1-ranked Duke.
Maurer played his first three seasons at Fresno State University, where he was named first team All-Western Athletic Conference in 1999 after netting three goals.
Based on last seasons regular season standings, the KiXX were given the seventh or eighth pick in each round. As the territorial pick, Philadelphia chose Seton Hall midfielder Brian Cuddy. The KiXX also selected University of Maryland-Baltimore County midfielder Louie Karko, University of Virginia midfielder Ryan Trout and Villanova defender Joe Noonan.
